The number one priority of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Armenia is to ensure peace and stability around the country. Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan stated this during Thursday’s debates on the 2025 state budget draft at the joint meeting of the standing committees of the National Assembly of Armenia—and in response to opposition MP Armen Rustamyan’s question as to whether as to whether the settlement of the Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) conflict is on the agenda of the Armenian MFA.
According to him, within this framework, the number one step and direction that they are considering—and toward which they are making efforts—is the process of normalization of Armenia’s relations with Azerbaijan.
“When we say ‘the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,’ we mean the entire conflict that happened, on paper. Until the [peace] treaty is signed [with Azerbaijan], it is not over. We all have our own ideas. I mean one thing by saying ‘Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,’ maybe you [mean] something else. We are currently working and our work has the following title: ‘normalization of relations with Azerbaijan,’” said Mirzoyan.
And regarding the question on international recognition of the Armenian Genocide, the Armenian FM said: “International recognition of the Armenian Genocide is not our number one priority. Studying the tragic passages in history, the Armenian Genocide, or making it a number one priority is certainly not the agenda of the [Armenian] MFA.”
