U.S. President Donald Trump, at the first session of the Peace Council, spoke again about Armenian–Azerbaijani relations, stating that the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan have become “good friends.”
“After 30 years of conflict, you realized that nothing is cheaper than peace. When you are at war, it costs 100 times more than establishing peace. You accomplished something very great—you and your new friend. We resolved this conflict in about 24 hours. I think they have become friends. For 32 years they killed each other, and in the Oval Office they felt very uncomfortable getting close to each other. I said, you can come a little closer. After an hour, they were side by side. We made a deal. They signed, and we established peace with two very important countries, and I will never forget that,” Trump said, urging Pashinyan and Aliyev to shake hands.
It should be noted that before this session, Pashinyan and Aliyev had only met informally.
